The adventure begins on the high seas in 1766, with a little kid named Billy Marvel. He gets work in a London theatre after surviving a shipwreck. His family thrives as outstanding actors there for centuries until 1900, when young Leontes Marvel is expelled from the theatre.

Nearly a century later, fugitive Joseph Jervis seeks safety in London with an uncle. Albert Nightingale's strange, beautiful house, with its mysterious portraits and ghostly presences, captures Joseph's attention and sends him on a quest for answers about the house, his family, and the past.
